Oxfordshire sides find out FA competitions fate

The draws for the opening rounds of the major FA competitions – the FA Cup, FA Trophy, FA Vase and FA Youth Cup were revealed on Friday morning.

The Extra Preliminary Round, on the 15th August, will see eight of our Hellenic sides kick off. Chinnor (home vs Hartley & Wintney), Hook Norton (home vs Frimley Green), Shrivenham (away vs Cove) and Thame United (home vs Farnham Town) were lucky enough for avoid familiar Hellenic foes, whilst Kidlington’s trip to Ascot United will see two of the favourites for the Hellenic title go head-to-head.

The standout tie in the Preliminary Round two weeks later is a derby between Wantage Town and Didcot Town, the second time in three years they’ve met at this stage (Didcot won 3-2). Banbury United and North Leigh could potentially face Oxfordshire derbies too, with Banbury playing the winners between Chinnor and Harley & Wintney, and North Leigh travelling to Cove or Shrivenham. Didcot come from behind to stun Forest Green

forestgreendidcot

Didcot staged a dramatic late comeback at Conference side Forest Green Rovers, securing a 2-2 draw that must go down as one of the club’s greatest results.

They had gone behind early in the second half, thanks to a spectacular effort from Jon Parkin and a similarly impressive Marcus Kelly strike.

However they didn’t give up, helped by a man advantage after Clovis Kamdjo was sent off in the first half, and Lance Williams brought them back into the game with 15 minutes to go, less than a minute after coming on.

And Didcot then equalised with five minutes left, with who else but John Mills getting the goal to force a replay on Tuesday night. Read more of this post

Didcot snatch victory to secure Forest Green tie

didcotmerthyr

Didcot Town overcame an impressive Merthyr Town in their FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round replay, winning 2-1 with goals from Pablo Haysham and Josh Dutton-Black.

They had taken the lead after just 88 seconds, with Haysham converting a pass from John Mills. Merthyr fought back, and deservedly equalised twenty minutes from time, however Dutton-Black restored the home side’s advantage with a well taken goal with just over ten minutes left.

Didcot hung on to the lead, and will now face Forest Green Rovers in the First Round on the 13th December. Read more of this post

Mills stars again but Didcot denied at last by Merthyr

MERTHYRDIDCOT

Didcot Town were moments away from reaching the First Round of the FA Trophy for just the second time, but were denied by a late equaliser for hosts Merthyr Town in a thriller in the Welsh valleys.

Two goals in three minutes from John Mills, in what may or may not be his last game for Didcot, and another from Pablo Haysham gave them a 3-1 lead, having gone behind on the half hour to a Kayne McLaggon goal.

The hosts were left to rue a flurry of missed chances after their opener, but they fought their way back into it, firstly with a Guillermo Bauza strike and then, in the sixth minute of stoppage time, an equaliser from Jamie Rewbury.

The two sides will now meet again on the replay on Tuesday night. Read more of this post
