Saturday Round-Up & Results – 28th November 2015

roundupIn an exciting day of action, Oxford United have gone to the top of League Two with a narrow victory in Hartlepool, whilst Oxford City got the better of Marlow in a nine-goal thriller to progress in the FA Trophy. There were wins in the Southern League for Didcot Town and Wantage Town, although Banbury United had to settle for a draw and North Leigh lost. Kidlington won their Oxfordshire Senior Cup Second Round tie, whilst Milton United and Thame United won in the Hellenic Premier.

Hartlepool United 0-1 Oxford United

Oxford United are top of League Two after a hard fought victory up in the north east. Danny Hylton, on as a substitute for new loan signing Chris Maguire, got the only goal twenty minutes from time, as United overtook Plymouth, who drew at Dagenham & Redbridge.

The FA Trophy, Third Qualifying Round
Oxford City 6-3 Marlow

Oxford City withstood Marlow in a thriller at Marsh Lane. After Marcus Meeling snatched the ball from Laurie Walker to give Marlow an early lead, City went ahead through Bradley Bubb and Reece Fleet, but Jordace Holder-Spooner equalised soon before the break. Another defensive mishap allowed Mealing to give his side the lead again, but Kynan Issac equalised before two goals for Marlon Jackson and a second for Bubb made the game safe. Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West
Didcot Town 5-1 Larkhall Athletic

Didcot won a third game in four against last season’s play-off finalists. Marvin Martin and Lance Williams gave Didcot a two goal lead, with Jack Self making it three before the break. Andy Ballard added a fourth, however Luke Carnell was then sent off for handball in the box, with Jamie Lyons pulling one back from the spot. However Williams then got a second of the game to seal an impressive victory for the Railwaymen to come within three points of their opponents and the top half of the table.

Slimbridge 1-2 Wantage Town

Wantage followed up last weekend’s victory against Marlow with another win for temporary manager Stuart Cattell in Gloucestershire. Both goals for the Alferians came from Ben Whitehead, early in each half, the first in the opening minute and the second straight from a corner. Paul Fahy scored a penalty late on for the hosts.

Swindon Supermarine 2-2 Banbury United

Banbury’s five game winning streak came to an end as they had to settle for a point in Wiltshire. Swindon led through Ash Taylor, however Darius Browne equalised for the Puritans eight minutes later. Leam Howards was sent off at the end of the first half, however strike partner Ricky Johnson then gave them the lead in the second half. However Swindon got the draw thanks to an equaliser from Josh Parsons.

Tiverton Town 2-1 North Leigh

North Leigh lost again to fall down to fourth, overtaken by their hosts, as well as Winchester City. Owen Howe and Ethan Phillips scored for Tiverton, with the Millers pulling one back before the break through Jon Else.

Uhlsport Hellenic League

Milton United got a great 5-0 victory over bottom side Wokingham & Emmbrook to move away from the bottom four. Further up the table, a goal from Dainel West with 15 minutes to go earned a win for Thame United at Highmoor-Ibis. However Oxford City Nomads lost 2-0 to Flackwell Heath, who go top, Ascot United are now second after beating fourth-bottom Ardley United 1-0, with Abingdon United just a point ahead of Paul Davis’s side after losing 4-0 to Highworth Town.

Elsewhere, in Division One West Easington Sports put eleven without reply past Tytherington Rocks, whilst Shrivenham gained a rare win against Shortwood United Reserves, and Clanfield and Letcombe drew 1-1. In Division One East Henley Town beat Headington Amateurs 3-1 in an all Oxfordshire affair, whilst Bicester Town won 3-2 against Woodley United. Chinnor lost 2-1 at Holyport and Old Woodstock Town lose 4-0 to Rayners Lane. North Leigh United were beaten 5-0 and knocked out of the Challenge Cup by Thatcham Town.

County Cups

Kidlington eventually overcame Woodcote/Stoke Row in a tough Senior Cup match. Lewis Coyle and Tommy Castle put them 2-1 up after going surprisingly behind, but Woodcote levelled before the break. Anaclet Odhiambo and Ryan Brooks scored in the second half to secure passage through to the Third Round.

In the Oxfordshire Charity Cup, there were big wins for Launton Sports (5-0 at Oxford Irish) and Charlton United (5-1 vs Cropredy), whilst amongst the other scores, Adderbury Park beat Broughton & North Newington 4-3, and last year’s runners-up Horspath were beaten 1-0 by Watlington Town.

Local Leagues

Freeland won 2-0 at Eynsham in the only Oxfordshire Senior League Premier Division game, with OUP staying top. Northway are a point off leaders Blackbird Rovers in Division One after an 8-0 win against Yarnton. In the North Berks, Berinsfield returned to league action after a month, beating Faringdon Town 5-3 to maintain their four point lead, with Saxton Rovers overtaking Kintbury Rangers into second spot on goal difference after an 8-0 win against Dorchester. In the Thames Valley Premier League, Rotherfield United drew 2-2 with Taplow United.

In addition to Easington, four other sides hit double figures today. Tower Hill Stars won 11-1 at Bamtpon United Reserves, Blewbury beat Drayton Reserves 10-0 and Woodcote/Stoke Row Reserves won at Sonning by the same scoreline, whilst FC Mills suffered another heavy defeat to the hands of Wootton, who won 10-1.
